Wes Craven’s Scream 2 is an exceptionally good sequel to the original Scream movie. It starts off as two college students going to watch a new horror flick called Stab. Stab is a movie based on the Woodsboro murders in the first movie and is full of fanatics wearing the Scream costume and mask. As the two students are watching, it becomes apparent that there is the real killer somewhere in the theatre. From this recap, the main story begins on a college campus. Some weird activities go on and the killer strikes again.
While I was watching this, I knew that I was watching a Slasher-Horror film. The atmosphere was perfect for it. You have a college campus, a serial killer on the loose, and plenty of teens who are linked to the first killings. The placement of the jump scares had me on the edge of my seat. Timing and unpredictability make horror films great and it goes without saying that Scream 2 definitely did a great job incorporating these aspects. The killer would always pop out of somewhere that I never had expected and catch me off guard. Even though there were some points that you could tell someone was going to get killed, it was still exciting because you never knew when or how the killer would catch their victim. Another important characteristic of this movie was its cast. With Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Jada Pinkett Smith, and many more great actors, it was hard to believe that this movie would not be good.
Therefore, Scream 2 was of great quality, not only because of the cast but because of the clear picture, the lighting and shadowing of each scene, and how each character was believable and was able to interact well with each other in each situation. However, Scream 2 is a rather long movie, with a runtime of two hours but I believe that it was worth it. Scream 2 was a revolutionary sequel that shows that the second movie in a series can be as good as the first and maybe even better.
I would give this movie a solid 7.5 out of 10. The movie is able to grab you at the beginning in the movie theater. It does a bit of story building and gets to the slashing. Like I said, it isn’t the scariest I’ve seen and the way that the movie presents itself as being consciously aware that it’s a sequel kind of takes away from the horror. The way that the killer chases the victims also decreases its scare factor, since he runs into walls and furniture and acts in a very comical way, but that doesn’t make this movie bad. These aspects and direction of the movie is what makes it stand and be unique. It wasn’t trying to be like other sequels and only cash in since the first movie did well. You can tell that they did it for the ratings and good response on the first film, but they also made it clear that they wanted to create a great series. By mixing humor and horror, they were able to achieve a wild but thrilling slasher horror flick.
This movie represents the college life more than the educational side of college. Although, there is one scene in the very beginning that gives some insight to how a college class interacts. All the students were sitting down, having a discussion about the recent murders. The teacher always kept the discussion on topic and was a moderator, guiding the students to share their ideas and feelings about what had happened. As for the college life, the movie depicted life outside of class as what you would expect. There were parties and sororities, students studying in the library, and students gathering outside of class. It’s mainly about a group of teen college students who just can’t seem to get away from the horror, much like the girl in Nightmare on Elm Street by Wes Craven. Overall, I think this movie was not just an amazing sequel but a great piece in the Scream series, much like most of Wes Craven’s other work.
